November 3 2019: Itinerary

We arrive at Queen Alia International Airport, Amman Jordan. After transferring to our five-star hotel in the heart of the “White City”, the rest of the day is ours to relax and recover from our flight. Amman has been inhabited since around the 8th millennium BC, and since then has felt the influence of occupying Ammonites, Assyrians and Persians – not forgetting the Greeks, Romans and, of course, the Arabs; a bustling, brilliant base for the start of our trip. Enjoy a welcome dinner at one of the leading Lebanese restaurants in Amman and is one of the few remaining vestiges of its type.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: Grand Hyatt Amman

After breakfast we embark on a City Tour of Amman. We start at the Citadel towers above the city atop Jabal al-Qala'a, an excellent vantage point to appreciate the cityscape below. The Citadel is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon and excavations here have revealed numerous Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. Downhill from the Citadel, we then visit the Roman Theater, a prominent and impressive relic.

Next, we drive to Jerash. Second only to Petra in appeal, this ancient city is remarkable for its long history of human occupation. Here in the hills of Gilead, remains from Neolithic times have been found, as well as Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad and more.

After lunch we drive back to our hotel in Amman where the rest of the day at leisure before meeting for dinner together.

All meals included

Hotel: Grand Hyatt Amman

Today begins with a drive to Mount Nebo, the mountain  mentioned in the bible where Moses was granted a view of the Holy Land but was not allowed to enter it. From here, enjoy a magnificent view over Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel. If the weather is clear, we may even be able to see Jerusalem.

Next, we make our way to the market town of Madaba, a destination famed for its mosaics. St. George's Church houses a world-famous mosaic floor containing a large map of Palestine, which also features a detailed map of Jerusalem as it was during the sixth century. We then continue to Shobak Castle, an imposing 12th-century stronghold that sits on a wild and open plateau, boasting secret passageways, carved catacombs and partially reconstructed kingly courts.

Finally we end our day with a drive to Petra, before checking into our hotel and enjoying dinner together.

All meals included

Hotel: Mövenpick Resort Petra

We dedicate today to the Ancient city of Petra. Built from 800 BC to 100 AD by Nabatean Arabs, Petra was a fortress, carved out of craggy rocks in an area which was virtually inaccessible. In the first and second century, the city reached the peak of its fame. Petra covers an area of about 100 square km, in which over 800 monuments can be found.  When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city's importance gradually dwindled; it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart. The Khazneh (the Treasury), was featured in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’.

This morning we explore Al Beidha, or Little Petra is also known, a site hidden away in the center of a mountain just north of Petra. This miniature version of Petra contains a number of notable tombs as well as a collection of stairs leading up to higher viewpoints. Like Petra, it is believed the site here dates back to the first century and features some well-preserved structures.

This afternoon we drive to Wadi Rum. This Jordan’s largest valley, made famous in part by its links to the writer T.E. Lawrence. Traces of prehistoric civilizations abound in rock art, graffiti and temples.

After lunch explore the desert on a board a 4x4 before settling down for the night in our wonderful “martian” domes in the desert.

All meals included

Hotel: Sun City Camp, Wadi Rum

On our final full day in Jordan, we depart Wadi Rum and drive to the Dead Sea. On route we visit a Women’s Collective, enjoying lunch together.

Once we arrive at the dead sea and check in to our hotel, the afternoon is at leisure. Since the days of Herod the Great, people have flocked to the Dead Sea in search of its curative secrets. Due to high annual temperatures, low humidity and high atmospheric pressure, the air is extremely exogenous, and the high content of oxygen and magnesium in the air make breathing a lot easier. With the highest content of minerals and salts in the world, the Dead Sea water possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and the dark mud found on the shores have been used for over 2,000 years for therapeutic purposes.

Tonight, we enjoy our final dinner together in Jordan.
